A Beginner’s Guide On How To Fish Using Worms

February 8, 2017 • Bacon908

One of the most popular types of fishing bait available to catch freshwater fish is the worm.  While placing a worm on the end of your fish hook may not be the most pleasant experience texture-wise, it is highly effective.  Despite the popularity and efficiency of the worm as bait, many anglers are unsure how to fish with this slimy creature sitting at the end of their hook.  This article will provide some top tips for the beginner fisherman on how to fish using worms.

The first thing that needs to be done when fishing with worms is to consider the type of worm you will be using.  Contrary to belief, not all worms are alike, and not all worms will provide the best service for your fishing expeditions.  The most popular fishing worm options include live earth worms, red worms, night crawls, Berkley Power worms, and smaller trout worms.  It must be noted, however, that while all of these worms can be beneficial as bait, the manner in which they are used is quite different dependent on the worm.

For example, live worms should always be stored in damp and dark environments as this is their natural habitat; whereas the Berkley Power worm can be stored in the container, they are sold in.  The key to live fishing worms being effective bait is the degree of their liveliness.  A man-made cousin worm is not as lively as a live earth worm, which means they will not grab a trout’s attention as quickly.

The next step to consider is how the worm is presented to the fish, and this is the area where many people will make mistakes.  One of the greatest errors fisherman often make when fishing with worms is that they ‘thread’ the worm onto the hook.  If the worm is not ‘threaded’, then the fisherman may have simply hooked the worm over and over again.  Unfortunately, while this seems effective, it is not effective at all and will not gather attention from the fish.

The ideal option to gain a trout’s attention is to present the worm in an outstretched and natural manner.  The simplest method to accomplish this task is to use a set of gang hooks.  By using a set of hooks, the worm will be hooked twice with the smaller hooks and will appear to be ‘floating’ naturally in the water.

The bottom line is that if you want to know how to fish with worms, begin by implementing the above steps.  If you wish to catch more fish, then using live worms is one of the best ways to go about it.
